Fertilizers

Fertilizers show their nutrient content with three bold numbers on the package. These numbers represent three different compounds: Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potash (Potassium), which we can also describe with the letters N-P-K. The three numbers listed on fertilizer labels correspond to the percentage of these materials found in the fertilizer. Nitrogen helps plant foliage to grow strong. Phosphorous helps roots and flowers grow and develop. Potassium (Potash) is important for overall plant health.

4 STEP Fertilization PROGRAM

Step 1 - March/April

Crabgrass Control With Fertilizer
Choose from +.125 Dimension or +0.29 Barricade, a 50 pound bag will cover 12,000 square feet. These are the two best crabicides on the market. Apply one or the other between approximately March 20th and May 1st depending on soil temperatures. Crabgrass begins to germinate when soil temperatures reach mid 50s for 72 hours or more.  (Dimension may be applied until June 10th - depending on soil temperatures). Both products must be watered into the lawn to activate. Note: Do not put down new grass seed and crabgrass control. Due to Dimension and Barricade being pre-emergents, this will prevent the seed from germinating. Wait 6-8 weeks after application to put down grass seed.

13-0-0 + .125 Dimension®, Regain® 50#; 12,000 sq. ft.
13-0-0 +.10 Dimension®, Regain® 50# Bag; 12,000 sq. ft.
12-0-0 +.29 Prodiamine(Barricade), Regain® 50# Bag; 12,000 sq. ft.

Step 2 - May/June

Weed-N-Feed
Choose from Weed and Feed +Trimec or +Viper to control broadleaf weeds including, but not limited to: dandelions, clover, thistles and creeping jenny.  Apply May 1st to June 30th. Apply when weeds are growing rapidly and temperatures are between 68 and 80 degrees. The best control is achieved when grass is moist (with the morning dew). For best results, avoid mowing and watering (and rain) for 48 hours after application. This is also a great time to control your Beetles, Grubs and Pests.

18-0-2 +Trimec, MOP, Regain® 50#; 12,000 sq. ft.
15-0-2 +Viper, SGN 150, SOP, Regain® 50# Bag; 12,000 sq. ft.

Grub Control

7-0-0 .2 Mallet, Grub Control 50# Bag; 12,000 sq. ft.

Step 3 - August/September

Turf Fertilizer or Weed-N-Feed
If your weeds are under control, apply ONLY a turf food fertilizer to continue healthy growth of your lawn. If your weeds are out of control, repeat Step 2 - Weed-N-Feed.

22-0-4 20% Top Cut (Organic), MOP, Regain® 50#; 12,000 sq. ft. (~1 lb. N)

StEp 4 - September - November

Winterizer
Winterizer is the most important step of the year for cool season grasses (Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Rye, Creeping Red Fescues). Apply a professional "winterizer" fertilizer with iron. Iron is essential for producing a strong root system to put your lawn to "sleep" for the winter and to give it that vibrant green for upcoming spring. It is important your lawn does not wake up "hungry" in the spring due to missing Step 4.

12-0-3 20% Top Cut (Organic), MOP, Regain® 50#; 12,000 sq. ft. (.5 lb. N)

TopCut logo.png

Top Cut® is an organic, nutrient-rich, nitrogen fertilizer source produced from biosolids. The addition of Top Cut to Spring Valley fertilizers replenishes the organic matter and also improves soil structure by increasing the soil’s ability to absorb and store moisture.
Top Cut® is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, two primary nutrients essential for turf growth, and also contains micronutrients such as calcium, sulfur, iron and humic acid. Because the nutrients are released as the plant needs it, they are less likely to leach into waterways, which is better for the environment. The slow release feeding also provides more uniform growth, a more established root system and thicker, healthier turf.

Regain Logo.png

Regain®: A stabilized nitrogen additive acting as a slow-release. It provides the most advanced, continuous protection and stabilization of applied nitrogen, insuring a turf manager’s fertilizer investment against wasteful nitrogen loss. Delivering the nutrient benefits at lower application rates, Regain products can decrease fertilizer costs over similar areas of application.
