Why Western Red Cedar?

Everyone in the landscape industry understands the many benefits of utilizing wood mulches for ground-cover. From moisture retention, erosion control to weed prevention and aesthetic beauty. The list is constantly growing; in fact many major cities in North America have made it mandatory to mulch around new planting's in efforts to significantly reduce the need for watering. Studies have shown growth rates of trees and shrubs to increase by as much as 15% when mulch is used. Following is a list of several questions the landscaper/consumer should ask about Western Red Cedar also referred to as WRC, when determining which mulch might best meet their needs.
How long does mulch last?
Some species of wood may rot and decay more rapidly than others; however WRC is naturally rot resistant. WRC fibers contain oils which act as natural preservatives making it out last most all other wood mulches.
Does the color of the mulch fade?
Yes, all mulches fade over time and depending on exposure to sunlight some may turn gray very rapidly. However WRC contains oils and tannins which enhance its deep rich red’s, gold’s and sienna browns longer than other mulches.
Does all mulch smell the same?
No and few would argue the fact that WRC has a unique fragrance which is amazingly refreshing.
What about blended species mulches?
Some blended mulches may be effective, however there is no true way to determine exactly what you’re getting or ensure consistency from one lad to the next. Its best to always insist on 100% unblended products.
Do wood mulches attract or provide homes to insects, beetles or other bugs?
Actually there are many types of wood mulches that do. Fortunately WRC contains naturally occurring organic compounds called (thujaplicins) which give off the distinctive aroma and although it is pleasant to humans it is proven to be deterrent to most insects ranging from moths and beetles to cockroaches and silverfish.
Does wood mulch work better than wood chips
?Absolutely, shredded mulch intertwines and locks together forming a “mat” which keeps it from blowing or washing away. In addition WRC mulch is very lightweight and fluffy when ground properly, making it incredibly thermally efficient which helps moderate soil temperatures.
What about mold?
Many other species of wood have been known to have mold or fungus growth; however WRC is known to be virtually mold free.
Is WRC commonly used as landscape mulch?
Yes, in fact WRC has become the premium mulch of choice by numerous professional landscapers. There has become a high demand for this product, and although WRC is not locally available, consumers are willing to pay the price of shipping such a premium product.
Is all cedar mulch alike?
Not at all, there are several different species of cedar in North America but only B.C. Western Red Cedar contains ALL of the most desirable characteristics especially the vibrant color and rich fragrance.
